    Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

What is BQ-9000 and what do I need to know about the organization?

Detailed BQ-9000 information and registration forms are supplied with all BBP business Plans.

http://www.bq-9000.org/ BQ-9000 is a voluntary organization that aspires to help producers and fuel distributors maintain industry standards by establishing voluntary guidelines to conduct business, test and distribute ASTM Biodiesel fuel.
If I produce biodiesel fuel can I get the $1.00 per gallon tax incentive?

All necessary tax incentive forms and  and registration instructions are supplied with all BBP business Plans.

Note: Call BBP and ask how you can get the $1.00 credit without blending with petro diesel.

Yes. However the fuel must be blended with petroleum diesel in order to qualify. In the B20 mix (20% bio / 80% petroleum) blenders will get $0.20 per gallon of blended fuel, or $1.00 per gallon of biodiesel used.

Additionally, Biodiesel producers can get a $0.10 per gallon tax credit on tax owed (not taxable income credit) for each gallon produced up to 15 million gallons, blended or not. Some states offer additional incentives on top of federal programs.
This must be agri-based fuel, for producers who make less than 60 million gallons per year. See Small Agri-Biodiesel Credit.

Will I be able to make money?

All BBP business Plans have detailed spreadsheets that allow you to accurately predict economics for your area.

Yes. But it takes some careful planning and local market analysis. Generally, there are two markets. Smaller operations located near feed stock sources, and larger operations, generally located near large distribution hubs.
What about regulations, permits, zoning, and other legal issues?

Special registration information instruction sheets are included all BBP business Plans.

The best location for understanding and learning about these and many other facts is at the National Biodiesel Board website:
  www.nbb.org
How much land will I need and what size of building?

Included in every BBP business Plan are site requirement charts that define typical site requirements.

That depends upon the size of the plant you intend to build, but generally a one and a half acres or so for a smaller unit. Figure one acre per million gallons of annual production.
Will I need rail access?

Calculators for predicting shipping and receiving are included in each plan.

If you intend to produce more than 10 million gallons annually it would be a good idea.
Where can I get feed stock?

Our clients have the advantage of inside information on securing the right type of feedstock at the best prices.

What is ASTM

Making fuel that is ASTM compliant is an absolute must. BBP can supply a wide range of sources for testing equipment and services. Our clients receive information location of the best training available for processing biodiesel.

ASTM is the acronym for American Standard of Tests and Measurements. This is the governing board that sets testing methods and standards for evaluating all types of substances including automotive fuels and oils. The standard set of tests for determining the quality of biodiesel is ASTM D6751x. This is the specification used in North America. There are other standards used in other parts of the world. The EN standard is used in Europe for example.
What is the National Biodiesel Board

All BBP clients receive special registration information and detailed instruction sheets that explain the process and the regulations.

The NBB is a lobbyist group for soy growers and the use of soy for biodiesel. One of the most important reasons for joining the NBB is their affiliation with the EPA fuel producers certification. This is a must have for producers. See www.nbb.org
What about vehicles converted to burn waste oil, or other hybrid fuels? True biodiesel is the only fuel approved by engine manufacturers for use. Converting cars to burn veg oil causes lots of carbon deposits, and excessive engine wear, not to mention it requires refitting the engine and special operation procedures. Other special hybrid fuels and unpredictable and have not been tested.
Biodiesel is a true 100% replacement for diesel, and has much higher lubricity, and lower pollution.
